Lichens: Nature's Compass

Dr Abe V Rotor
Crustose lichen with juvenile fruticose lichen (branching)

Foliose lichen (leaf-like)

Three types of lichens are represented here - mature fruticose lichen, juvenile crustose and foliose (right, whitish and scale-like, respectively)

Lichen, what magic have you to know where
lies the star in the northern coast,
in your nakedness devoid of senses -
and I, all knowing, am here lost?

Here in a jungle of trees and lianas,
and orchids of the brighest bloom,
longing for freedom back for home
away from this lush green room.

My childhood biology friend, tell me
the way by your compass in every tree,
with your kin, the blue green to confirm:
Should I leave your world and be free? ~
