Jungle Survival: Building a Fire

Dr Abe V Rotor
Primitive way of making fire. Anyone who watched the movie Castaway knows how the actor played by Tom Hanks made fire, succeeding only after tremendous effort. It was his greatest triumph as a lone survivor in an island for four long years. The principle of fire making is spontaneous combustion. Dry materials like bamboo and grass reach kindling temperature through sustained friction, slowly emitting smoke, flickering and bursting to flame. Courtesy of Subic Bay Ecological Park.
