Re-inventing the Wheel with the Children

Children's Summer Workshop 2013 Lagro QC, conducted by the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters' faculty development program led by Dr Abe V Rotor

Children in the neighborhood taking time out to learn the practical uses of the wheel in modern times. Lagro QC

From a rolling stone moving downhill, the wheel was born in man's creative mind to become his first true invention that revolutionized his life and his society.

From the rolling stone evolved the idea of the cart, caleza, chariot - all made possible by another discovery - animals as beasts of burden to ease man’s work.

With wheels for transport, roads were built, bridges laid across rivers, new settlements founded, and people moved faster and farther into new territories.

The wheel formerly made of solid stone, then of wooden spokes, soon took various makes and forms to serve man's unending needs, this time as machine.

Machine to grind grains, to crush sugarcane, to bring up water from wells and rivers, to power trains and cars - transforming man's life into a modern world.

A modern world with the wheel re-invented into wind mill and waterwheel to generate electricity, engine that move man across and between continents.

The re-invented wheel gave man electronic gadgets from TV, computer, to space satellite, hand-held tablet, shrinking the whole wide world into a global village.

But the wheel was also re-invented for war, from guns to missiles that carry weapons of mass destruction threatening to destroy civilization and man himself.

Beauty and goodness the wheel took shape, from stone to postmodern age, affirming man's ideal and nobility, yet paradoxically transforming into a monster.

The wheel re-invented in the hands of children lies a new hope for peace and understanding, ideas that bring back a glorious past, in colorful toys and pure joy. ~

There's one road you travel on down the bend:
going home every day in your life 'til its end.

when the sun is low, and when it's going down,
you have to leave, and home you're bound.

when the fowls roost in their favorite tree,
you too, shall cease in your work and spree.

when the leaves of the acacia tree start to fold,
start walking home, a wise advice of the old.

when the fields are empty, save the haystacks,
and some old gleaners bent on their backs.

when the prop roots of the balete appear ghostly,
even if you are afraid, don't show, walk bravely.

when on your way someone greets you cheerfully,
or otherwise, show concern in kindness or glee.

when the road is rough and the sky gloomy,
the more you strive to be home early.

when in comfort you would let your chance to slip,
remember Frost, "and miles to go before I sleep."

when abroad making a living or on mission,
you look forward to be home during off-season.

when sick and lonely, far, far away from home,
you crave for no other place than Home, Sweet Home.

when bestowed with honor for glory and valor,
you share it home to add your country's color.

when it is payday, go straight home, don't delay;
a takeout for the family will make the day.

when approaching home the whole household
greets you - what a happy family to behold!

when the bell tolls the Angelus, it's time to pray,
and every one pauses for a while in his way.

when the day is over, when life comes to an end,
finished or not your task, it's time to say, Amen.

Rainbow on a Wall Mural

Rainbow on a Wall Mural
Dr Abe V Rotor

I painted a wall and brought a rainbow down;
it fell on the grass, over my head its crown;
what my painting lacked, it gloriously filled,
and I, the artist humbled, my pride stilled.

Now I understand how a masterpiece is made,
the Sistine chapel, Berlin wall, Roman pallisade,
these classical works, their secrets long sought -
it's the Creator's expression in man's thought. ~

Convergence – what is it like with a rainbow?

     Its arch and seven colors in a bond.
So with the artist, his concept full and clear,
     Man-Heaven-Earth are but one.

Campaign Trail Break with Nature

Dr Abe V Rotor
Ecology Wall Mural by the Author

Let Nature soothe your aching feet, tired nerves, and declining zest;
talk to the birds, cool off on the running stream, cling of some vine,
beyond the hills, beyond cares and worries, where life is at its best,
where mortals dare to tread sans wealth or power, where life is divine.

A thousand words not enough to tell the story
of creation, while we are here in our brief stay;
in reality and fantasy, we are intertwined in every
living thing, meeting a common fate someday.

Why we pursue power and wealth,
mistake them for happiness;
peep into the hollow of a tree,
in a crevice down the sea;
on the crest of waves,
in a nest atop a tree
or up in the blue sky
where birds fly free -
and we? ~
