2011 was a Year of People's Revolution

2011 - the year that was, the year of people's revolution in 12 Human Indices. This list serves as framework for lecture and discussion on the radio program.

1. Environment and Ecology

Saplings (immature trees) illegally cut for construction and firewood. Illegal logging and deforestation are the principal causes of flash floods and erosion. The recent flood in Mindanao and Visayas which claimed thousands of lives and millions of pesos worth of properties was traced to environmental abuse.

Endangered species like this Bengal tiger threaten ecological diversity and balance. Renewed efforts to save threatened and endangered animal and plants are heard from all over the world.

Teachers are going back to school for graduate studies and refresher courses, such as CHED-UST tie-up for public school teachers continuing education.

7. Health and Medicine
H1N1 Flu virus scare is back, and it's for real - this time a more virulent Avian flu virus that directly attack humans, fouls and animals particularly swine. The triad poses much greater possibilities of spread of the disease to a point of pandemic in proportion.

8.Science and Technology

Where did life come from? Outer space! There are evidences that life exist outside our planet - the the asteroid belt, in Mars, in a moon of Jupiter, and even in outer space beyond our solar system. The Spanish flu virus is though to have come from outer space.

Revive organisms from their fossils? Take it from the movie - Jurassic Park. Now attempts are being made to recreate extinct species from their DNA embedded in their fossils.
