Young sunflowers track the sun from east to west daily through heliotropism, but mature sunflowers stop moving and permanently face east. Young sunflowers exhibit a phenomenon called heliotropism, where their flower heads follow the sun across the sky from sunrise in the east to sunset in the west. This movement is driven by differential growth in the stem: cells on the shaded side elongate faster than those on the sunlit side, causing the stem to bend toward the light. The plant hormone auxin regulates this process by accumulating on the shaded side, promoting cell elongation and enabling the flower to track sunlight biologyinsights.
