Mackie 6, explores the living world under the microscope. 
 
A drop of pond water reveals a myriad of  microorganisms, a whole world beyond the limit of our naked eye. Filaments of green alga (100x magnification), and closeup of a protozoon. 


That was many years ago when I last peered through the microscope in school, after that I lost tract of the wealth of nature hidden beyond our unaided eye, a break for getting old, relinquishing microscopy to the younger scientists;  

The world of the living minutiae is more complex and richer in diversity - living and non-living things in a state of dynamic balance and harmony, as compared with the living world as we know today; 

Here the cycles of nature - living and non-living, organic and inorganic, elements and  compounds - undergo  a never ending process, universal, and specific, but all leading towards what is known as homeostasis

What is life then, how do we define it, when we have barely explored the living world?
How much more life at the depth of the oceans and in the vastness of the cosmos through which our planet Earth travels, chart-less toward the unknown;

What is biodiversity then when we can barely understand specimens in the extremes - single celled to multi-cellular, prehistoric to evolving species, with new realms opening up for study of fossils, and records in archives?

Two generations gap, and here is my grand daughter of the Phoenix generation following the millennial generation, urging me to open the microscope long kept in the attic - do I still know how to operate it and know my specimens? 

The challenge is both, but greater is my part, teacher and guardian, the bridge of traditional and modern, the so-called expert in an era of knowledge and skill  "explosion" - what with cyber technology?

To Mackie, budding scientist and artist, the challenge is now and the future, the continuum of man's search of the unknown, more of the why rather than the what, where, who, when and how of things and events;

What is in the microscope, and why is it there?  What are these living fossils, simple organisms that barely changed in the course of evolution through millions of years?  What is their key to survival and resistance to change? 

The more we discover things the more we are puzzled, like the higher we go up the mountain, the wider but beclouded is the view. The microscope has led us to see the once invisible virus, and certain molecules; 

Science is "One small step of man, a giant leap for mankind" - adage in the landing on the moon.  On the other hand, science is "God's Particle" - when scientists reached the edge of research of the Higgs Boson.  Both experiences tell of man's dream and humility;

Look into the microscope and see more than the lens can reveal.  It reveals man's search for purpose and meaning of life.  It is yet the greatest lens ever, and ever will be, for Little Mackie et al and the next generations to look into - throughout their lives. ~

Wonder what the stream sings all day, season after season,
     from the mountains down to this peaceful realm;
down the valley among trees of my ancestral generation,
     reminiscent of Eden as it may seem.

Wonder the chirping of birds as they greet the morning sun,
     their nests come alive, usher a new life’s beginning;
crawlers from their abode stir, the winged up into the air;
     prayer not in words, but obedience to Nature’s calling.

Wonder if we too, find reverence in this world of green,
     rainbow above, crystalline stream below,
living pillars make a cathedral beyond glass and steel,
     epitome of worship the arts couldn't show.

Wonder how man was vanished from this beautiful home,
     in exchange of a postmodern creed;
hours of work and pleasure, searching for a meaning
     of life, amassing wealth beyond his need.

Wonder not what the stream sings all day, season after season;
     it is life well lived, a singular gift of a Giver;
here a bridge across yearns for the Prodigal Son to return
     to an Eden thought to have been lost forever.

Here are two paintings I started and finished together is a given time frame: a scenario of millions of years ago, while the other is a scenario of a fast vanishing ecosystem. They depict two stages of forest evolution, between them is a great divide of time and space. The primeval model is a rock face overgrown by bryophytes - mosses, liverworts and hornworts, while the other model (lower photo) depicts an undisturbed forest, remnant of the virgin tropical rainforest. These paintings grace the residence of the artist-author where workshops for children on Nature are conducted every summer. ~

Countryside scenes showing valuable lessons in life

Go to the countryside and live life away from congested traffic, crowded community, 
polluted air and surroundings.  Stop, look, listen - and more importantly appreciate
nature, such as these trees laced with lianas and ferns.  Wonder at the the workings of mutualism and  cooperation we sometimes mistake as parasitism. Is this a design of successful evolution?  Instead of competition, cooperation; instead of isolation, union of compatible species. On the humanities side, why don't you write a verse or two, take some photographs, sketch or paint.  Or compose a simple melody, or a prayer?.

It's our national symbol for agriculture - the water buffalo or carabao, the most important beast of burden even in our times of agricultural mechanization. Kids don't know much about the carabao.  It's our duty as grownups to introduce this domestic animal, now a threatened species, in a number of ways:  First, it pulls the plow and harrow, and the wooden cart for transport.  Second, it lives an aquatic life virtually speaking, it wallows in mud and make a miniature pond which serves as habitat of fish, frogs, snail and other freshwater species. Here these organisms aestivate in summer, then "resurrect" in monsoon and spread out and multiply and become popular viand to the locality. Third, association of the carabao and the heron is a romantic piece for the arts. It is a favorite subject of Amorsolo (painting), Abelardo (music), local artisans (sculpture), folklore and legend. Fourth, how is our carabao related to the American bison, and other buffaloes of the world? By the way, have you traced the nesting ground of the heron? These are areas of scientific research that invite our children as future biologists and naturalists.

You may choose your pet, but when a motherless newly born goat nudges you for milk thinking you are its mother, would you simply ignore?  Mek-mek is one month now, she has yet to find grass palatable.  That will be the time to wean her.  Wonder how a goat becomes a house pet. And a neighborhood pet as well.  Children come around and curiously find out if a goat is like a dog or cat.  Does it purr, bark, stand, does tricks. Can she be an errand, a guard, live in the bedroom, accompany children to school, have puppies and kittens (kids)? These arouse children's curiosity outside their school.  Education is endless and has no borders. So with love.  It may start with an orphaned baby goat.

Yes, trees change clothes, too, once or twice a year.  Not for the reason we humans do, but for what Nature has designed them to do:  that is, to allow the sun to bathe their whole being and get rid of pests, diseases, and dried twigs. Nature prepares them for the winter in cold countries.  In the process ground plants receive sunlight and nourishment and  before the trees gain back their crown, they shall have completed their short life cycle and once more lie dormant. Earthworm, mushroom, and a host of organisms in the ground get similar benefit as well. We call trees that completely shed their leaves as deciduous.  They form new and fresh crowns thereafter.  Come autumn in temperate countries and behold the spectacular view of ripening leaves in yellow, orange and red, then when the wind blows, they fall off like confetti and cover the streets, sidewalks, backyards and fields.  Listen to the music Autumn Leaves while watching the leaves fall to the ground and sweep on the ground.

How bountiful is Nature, you can only guess from these photos: nangka laden with fruits from trunk to branches, and you won't believe it, even on its roots underground. On the other hand, pineapple, the only edible member of the Bromeliad Family, covers whole fields as far as the eyes could see on the sloping hills of Tagaytay in Batangas and Cavite. Fruits are food reserves of energy converted by photosynthesis from sunlight, indeed a great mystery beyond man's knowledge on how  energy is converted to matter.  And how matter is converted again into energy. No wonder when we eat fruits we gain reserves of energy, other nutrients notwithstanding, which we use in everyday work - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

These two organisms live underground: earthworm and ant lion larva (ukoy-ukoy Ilk).  Earthworms are good housekeepers, they bring out their waste (castings) outside their burrow and become natural fertilizer, while the ant lion builds a funnel of sand that serves as pit trap to unwary ants and other small insects that become its prey. Children are not so keen at these subterranean creatures, they have to catch them as specimens in their science laboratory.  And what importance do they contribute to the living world? They are links to the food chain, they are part of the web of life. How?  Know more about them on the Internet or in the library, better still from your science teacher.

Don't look too far out, you may miss things under your nose such as these communities of mushroom on a fallen log, and fern growing on a stonewall.  
While you can't touch the mountain, you can with ease and comfort study the magical  Auricularia that lives with rain and dies in summer and rises to life again.  Or the Maiden Hair Fern (Adriantum) and imagine it were a real hair of a beautiful maiden. Science and art - how wonderful it is to weave them into a beautiful tapestry.
Only if we use of left (science) and right (creativity) brain in tandem.

What a disparity: a beautiful garden like The Secret Garden of novelist Frances Hodgson Burnett on one hand, and an ultramodern community with a high frequency transmitter tower, harbinger of death over buildings and homes, on the other. Where is the Good Life? What is progress? Where does true happiness lie? Wonder what Paradise would be like if our first ancestors had lived there and bore many children and grandchildren, who too, ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge.

Native - a word taken for granted; to some, a reflection of the past.  It is history to indigenous people who have found themselves in the stream of modern society.  Native is traditional.  It is bias, I may say.  I still love native: native chicken, the bahay kubo, barong Tagalog, bamboo tree house, rattan chair, bayong, buri hut. Indigenous peoples once subjects of colonizers are gaining respect and recognition for their pioneer defiance against foreign invaders.  We have Lapu-lapu, first Filipino hero, and Mac-liing environment protector of the Chico River.  South America alone has produced modern day indigenous heroes such as Miriam Miranda, Honduran Garifuna Leader; and Marcos Terena, Brazilian Trailblazer.  The Unknown Soldier could be a native to his country.~

Apparently this verse points out the aim of research, the deliverance of man from two major disasters which characterize his own historical past: war and hunger - which, still hang today more than ever like Damocles sword.



Research is a tool of peace; it is also a way to prosperity, an answer I can offer to the question, "What is the ultimate aim of research?"

To appreciate this thesis, we should first understand certain qualities of research. Research is categorized into two stages: basic research, that which establishes or confirms a fundamental knowledge or principle, like nitrogen fixation: and applied research, that which is functional and is of practical value, like employing Rhizobia to increase crop yield and improve soil condition.


Functional research makes use of the result of basic research. The unity of the two is a horse-and-carriage relationship. It is like saying, "useless each without the other." But for a country which can hardly afford the high cost of research, where productivity of farms is low, where half of the population is below poverty line, destruction of environment rampant, to mention a few dilemma, research in its functional aim is undoubtedly the priority. It is this area of research which this paper is concerned about.



10 POSTULATES OF FUNCTIONAL RESEARCH

1. Teach the young the DISCIPLINE OF RESEARCH
Start research education early. Research is not just a tool of the thesis student and the scientist. Even in the grades, pupils should be challenged to do research. It is a healthy way to search original knowledge.


2. Research on CURRENT AND RELEVANT ISSUES

Keep abreast with issues of the day, but keep close to those which have direct effect to the community, to solving contemporary problems, to tapping new opportunities to improve life.


3. INTEGRATE THE NATURAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Pollution is both a scientific and social problem and must be viewed on both perspectives. So with issues concerning health and livelihood


4. LINK RESEARCH WITH ENTERPRISE

If a rice technology gives a high yield of 5 MT/ha, does it also mean to be economically viable on the part of the farmer? It is doubtful, of course, if the cost of production outstrips profit. What if the farmer gets only 50 percent batting average with the new technology?


5. Strive to make RESEARCH PAY FOR ITSELF. Make RESEARCH AS AN INVESTMENT

There is no free lunch in research. Someone, somehow, must have to pay forr the cost. That is why research must look into the opportunity to generate income at one time or the other. It must be part of the enterprise, integrated in its structure and programs. Thus, it is investment itself.


6. Make RESEARCH INTERESTING/ENTERTAINING

Research should not be drudgery. It should be a source of joy and excitement, as any discovery is.


7. Dig out the files and PUT RESEARCH INTO USE

Many researches gather dust in institutions and schools. Dig out those relevant ones and put them to use. Research is a perishable commodity; make use of them before they get spoiled.


8. Aim at the "GREATEST GOOD OF THE GREATEST NUMBER"

In short, target the grassroots, the masses, and the improvement of their lot.


9. Always remember "THE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH"

Do not just be truthful; you must prove your research to be true. Truth may be based on formula or historical data, above all, moral truth


10. Do not forget that there is always the element of PROVIDENCE

Serendipity is not just accident. Luck is often disguised grace coming from the Almighty. Pray, it works. ~

Violins must be checked and played regularly to enhance their sound quality. A violin which has not been played for some time loses its timbre and radiance, like a singer who has stopped exercising his vocal chord.

The violin, while it has ancient origins, acquired most of its modern characteristics in 16th-century Italy, with some further modifications occurring in the 18th century. Violinists and collectors particularly prize the instruments made by the Gasparo da Salò, Giovanni Paolo Maggini, Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati families from the 16th to the 18th century in Brescia and Cremona and by Jacob Stainer in Austria. (Wikipedia)

If there is any musical instrument that appreciates with time, count on the violin. The more antique it is and it is "original" the more it is prized. An original Stradivarius was auctioned in the US for than $3 million. Since then there was a frantic search for the other Stradivarius violins - at least a dozen believed to be still existing.

I received a dozen calls and personal visits from my friends looking for a Stradivarius. One decoyed a ball park price. Who knows if there's one in the Philippines?

To my surprise a religious guest visited me  and asked if I know of a violin there has a hand written certification in ink by the master violin maker Stradivarius. The inscription is supposed to be expertly hidden in the violin's chamber and can be seen only through the sound hole with the aid of a magnifying glass. What a luck if indeed this is true. That would mean a fortune. I related to prominent violinists like the late Professor Paulino Capitulo of the Manila Symphony of this ambitious quest. He wryly commented, "Treasure hunting, huh!"

My first violin was a three-quarter, then moved on to the standard (4/4) violin. Children can start early with the one-half or the three-fourth violin, to be able to reach the strings and learn the rudiments of this enigmatic classical instrument. The violin was already in its form as we know it today as early as during the Renaissance in Europe.

It was during the Spanish conquest in 1521 and subsequent colonization of the Philippines that the violin - and other classical instruments found their way to the hands of Filipinos - and were passed on through generations. One old violin found its way to my family. My dad got a 1776 Czechoslovakian violin, Guadagnini , which he gave to me as a gift in high school. It is the most treasured of all my violin collections.


Part 2:  Restoring Old Violins

The first time I tried to repair a violin was when I was in Grade 3. Two strings broke, the bridge cracked and all pegs got stuck up. Lolo Mariano Navarette whom I fondly called Uncle Anno came to the rescue. He was a violin maker and his children were all musicians. Manong John and Manong Berning both played the violin and Manang Katy would accompany them on the piano. What a lovely weekend the family did make! Anyone passing by would pause and looked up to this house of music. And we kids in our time would dream someday of becoming musicians.

Uncle Anno took the dilapidated instrument and gently examined it. "Come," he said, and we went to his small shop, a couple of blocks away from our house. Step by step the instrument returned to its original form and at the end of the day began playing the melodies of Mozart and Liszt. I did not only witness a Lazarus, I was transported into the land of the cherubim.

The violin takes you away from the cares and worries of the world. The soul leaves behind the material world. There musical notes are not mere symbols, they are real expressions. The sounds of Nature - waves, breeze, birdsong, even thunder - transform into music which only the violin can best mimic. But mimicry is a biological term; the violin does more - it elevates it to the level of humanities and the highest and most fleeting form of art.

Even the blue sky - silent and seemingly empty - exudes music, at first inaudible, then incubating into a musical composition. Music of the great naturalists like Beethoven can do just that. The conventions of music become intimately personal to a violinist and no one would question his honest interpretation emanating from mind-heart-soul. This is one aspect of the universality of music as a language for all humanity.

I saw the transformation of the forgotten musical instrument as Uncle Anno brought it back to life.

Since then for the past sixty years, I became a disciple of this unsung great violin maker, the local counterpart of Stradivarius - here in San Vicente, a small town three kilometers west of Vigan, which in many respects was then a little Vienna (Austria), and a little Cremona (Italy).

I really did not make violins, instead I repaired damaged ones and restored those that have been put away for a long time. Some relegated to the garbage bin. More often I would set (break, in technical parlance) new units until they "open up" into fullest expression. And I would check violins regularly or on occasions.

Violin is my favorite thing. Like in the song of Maria in The Sound of Music, the violin perks me up, "... and then I won't feel so sad." More so, every time a small child carrying a violin would come to me. Just like Uncle Anno, I would examine his violin and put music in it that would last a lifetime. ~

Part 3: The Violin - Beware of the "Experts." How Genuine are Stradivarius Violins?

I decided to post it in this blog with the aim at making people aware on the genuineness of violins claimed to be original Stradivarius. This is a guide to unwary victims after a guest came to the museum looking for an original Stradivarius. For sixty long years as a violin enthusiast I never had a chance to get hold of a genuine Strad. Beware of "copy" versions. This holds true to other famous brands. - Dr AV Rotor

luthier (maker of violins and other stringed instruments), the most prominent member of that profession. The Latin form of his surname, "Stradivarius" - sometimes shortened to "Strad" - is often used to refer to his instruments.

So You Think You’ve Found A Strad? Guess Again!

In 1908 a famous Belgian violinist named Eugene Ysaye was on a concert tour in St. Petersburg in Russia. He had with him four Stradivarius violins. One of the Strads was stolen from his hotel room, and was not recovered.

In 1951 a soldier in the Korean war found a violin hidden in the wall of a rundown farm house. It was subsequently authenticated as a genuine Stradivarius.

Out of such stories as these – which are supposed to be true – has arisen a collectors’ myth. That myth is that you might find an incredibly valuable Strad yourself – hidden away in your attic or basement or perhaps at a yard sale down the block. And many people actually have found violins which carry the name of that master genius of violin-makers, the maestro of Cremona, Antonius Stradivari (whose name some misrepresent as “Stradivarius”). But these people are most often the victims of a cruel, if perhaps unwitting, hoax.

Antonio Stradivari was born in 1644 and set up his shop in Cremona, Italy, where he made violins and other stringed instruments (harps, guitars, violas and cellos) until his death in 1737. He took a basic concept for the violin and refined its geometry and design to produce an instrument which has served violin makers ever since as the standard to strive for. His violins sang as none had before them, with a clearer voice and greater volume, and with a pureness of tone which made them seem almost alive in the hands of a great violinist. His was one of three great families of violin makers in Cremona during the 1700s and 1800s, the other two being those of Guarneri and Amati, but Stradivari’s violins have been judged by history to be the best. Two of Stradivari’s sons continued his work after his death.

Every Strad was made entirely by hand, with a painstaking care devoted to the selection of woods and even the texture of the finishing varnishes. This was no assembly-line operation, and the best estimates have Antonio producing no more than around 1,100 instruments, including the violins, in his entire lifetime. Of these, an estimated 630 to 650 still survive the more than 250 years since they were made. 512 of these survivors are violins. Many others were destroyed in fires or other accidents, were lost at sea or in floods, and some were destroyed by the fire-bombing of Dresden in World War II. Virtually none are unaccounted for. Today a genuine Strad is worth two to three million dollars.

So where did those violins which have turned up in attics and closets all over the world come from? Why would anyone who found one think he had a real Strad? The answer is very simple: copies.

Today master violin-makers are using modern science – including the latest scanning devices and digital imaging techniques – to unlock the “secrets” of Stradivari and recreate instruments of his quality. One Canadian violin-maker, Joseph Curtin, and his American partner, Gregg Alf, created a copy, right down to every scratch and shading of varnish, of a specific instrument known as the Booth Stradivari, which Stradivari made in 1716. It sold at a Sotheby’s auction in 1993 for $42,460 – to a concert violinist.

But for close to two centuries much shabbier copies have been made and sold – bearing “Stradivarius” labels. For this reason, the presence of a Stradivarius label in a violin does not mean the instrument is genuine.

The usual label – both genuine and false – carries the Latin inscription “Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno [date],” which gives the maker (Antonio Stradivari), the place (Cremonia), and the year of manufacture, the actual date either printed or handwritten. It was this Latin label which gave the world the name “Stradivarius.” After 1891, when the United States required it, copies might also have the actual country of origin printed in English at the bottom of the label: “Made in Czechoslovakia,” or just “Germany.”

Hundreds of thousands of these copies were made in Germany, France, central and eastern Europe, England, China, and Japan, starting in the mid-19th century and continuing into current times – and literally millions exist today. They bear counterfeit labels proclaiming them to be by not only Stradivari but Vuillaume, Amati, Bergonzi, Guarneri, Gasparo da Salo, Stainer, and others.

Music shops and mail order houses originally sold these violins at prices which made it plain no deception of the buyer was intended – some were claimed to be “tributes” – they ranged from $8.00 to $27.00 apiece, and were identified in advertisements as “copies” or “models.” But their similarity to the instruments they were copied from is minimal to a trained eye – or ear. While some involved hand-crafting, the vast majority were mass-produced. It was not until 1957 that the words “Copy of” were added to some of the labels.

Even today one can find advertisements for a “Stradivarius Violin” which comes “Complete with Decorative Stand and Bow,” and is claimed to be “a wonderful replica of the eminent Stradivarius violin,” designed for displaying “on the wall or atop a bureau or coffee table” for a mere $29.95.
Once in a while a real Strad turns up – usually after a theft or accidental loss.

In 1967 a 1732 Strad, named for the Duke of Alcantara and owned by UCLA’s Department of Music, was loaned to a member of UCLA’s Roth String Quartet. He apparently either left it on top of his car and drove off, or had it stolen from inside his car. A woman turned up with it in 1994, claiming her former husband’s aunt had given it to her husband, and she had acquired it in a divorce settlement. She said their family lore had it that the aunt had found the violin beside a road. UCLA eventually gave the woman $11,500 to regain the violin and avoid a protracted court fight.

So what should you do if you find a violin with a Stradivarius label – or that of any other famous violin maker from centuries ago? You should have it appraised by an expert, and most such experts are members of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers. Expect to pay for the appraisal. The authentication of a violin can be determined only by a careful examination of such factors as the design, model, craftsmanship, wood, and varnish. It’s not hard to separate out the mass-produced violins from the actual hand-made instruments, but it takes a well-trained violin appraiser to be able to attribute the violin to a specific maker or place of manufacture.

Don’t expect your find to be genuine. The odds against finding the real thing are slim to none. Nevertheless, you might have a decent violin, and if you can play the instrument, that will be its own reward.~
