Goats in the Late Afternoon

Native goats, result of open multiple crosses, similar to mongrels.

Whose goats are these in late afternoon,
Leashed on the range in October?
They call their master in crispy notes,
To hurry up before the day is over.

They brave the sun, they paint the field,
     Brown, black, white and roan,
Tamed from the Rockies and Himalayas
     This native breed their clan.

Master and pet, their world complete,
Without purpose and sense of time,
In the shadow of Orwell and Aesop,
Walk home in peace sublime. ~
