Saltbeds, Calatagan, Batangas
Widespread pollution threatens the industry. Salt is gathered from these shallow ponds. High tide brings in water from the sea and leaves the salt behind in thin crust which is then gathered and sold directly as table salt. Heavy metals like lead, mercury and cadmium, are among the pollutants that go with the salt. In places near settlements, industries and farms, pollutants may include silt brought down by erosion, fertilizer and pesticide residues from farms, domestic wastes notwithstanding.
